At Route 101 we have always been conscious of our impact on the planet. We work closely with our suppliers to ensure they are as sustainable as possible and work hard to reduce our carbon footprint. Now in 2023, we are proud to announce our partnership with Carbon Neutral Britain to offset our carbon output through investment in worthwhile projects around the world that reduce the amount of CO² or equivalents in the earth's atmosphere.
Minimising our impact
As a cloud systems integrator, it is impossible to get around the fact that the contact centre solutions we provide require energy to function as well as they do. As well as our suppliers Route 101 itself generates a certain amount of carbon emissions as we go about our daily business. To help mitigate this effect over the past few years, we have taken some basic steps towards reducing our imprint.
The first step was to make ensure that all of our suppliers’ eco policies fall in line with ours and that they take every reasonable step to make certain their solutions minimise the environmental impact as much as possible. They do this through a number of ways such as green energy schemes and high-quality carbon removal credits that remove and store carbon from the atmosphere.
Secondly, we looked at what changes could be made internally. We looked at minimising travel through improved collaborative and meeting technology, as well as introducing a bike-to-work scheme. We have also reduced the amount of waste we produce and increased the amount of recycling we do at our office in Bristol. And, as a rapidly growing tech company, we use our fair share of electrical items, so we make sure that we dispose of them in an ethical way, either through the second-hand market or in accordance with WEEE recycling directives.
Finally, we have made efforts to build environmental concerns into our decision-making so that decisions are considered from an eco-friendly point of view, helping to guard against an unnecessary increase in our environmental impact.
Carbon Neutral Britain
To help take our carbon credentials to the next level we have partnered with Carbon Neutral Britain a respected carbon offsetting service. They helped us to calculate our carbon footprint to the ISO 14064 and GHG Protocol Emissions Standard, measured in tonnes of Carbon Dioxide Equivalent (CO²e). They then advised us on how we could reduce our emissions, and helped us offset the remaining carbon footprint with certified projects in Britain and around the world that reduce the amount of CO²e in the earth’s atmosphere.
All of their carbon offsetting projects are verified to the highest standards via the four largest Carbon Certifications in the world - the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), Gold Standard Voluntary Emission Reductions (VER), UK and EU Emissions Trading Standard (EU + UK ETS), and the United Nations Certified Emission Reductions (CER) programmes.
These global projects include a reforestation project in Nicaragua, Australia and Uruguay that take unused or inefficient land and replant them with forests which help to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere whilst also protecting and encouraging biodiversity. Other projects include hydro and wind power in Chile and China that will help to generate significant amounts of green electricity and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
